    Master Plan Revision

2022 brings the task of revising Tyrone Township’s Master Plan alongside our Township leaders. We aim to be a supportive entity as our Planning Commission leads the community through this important prcess of reflection, design and development.

Imagine yourself 500ft in the air looking down…what do you want Tyrone Township to look like?

What revenue is needed to properly fund the community you envision?

What does appropriate development look like to you?

Our focus must shift from expressing what we don’t want to carefully considering what we do want, and the means to that end. Our Zoning Ordinances are the lawful components of our local government that should align and support our Master Plan. In tandem, these are the forces that shape the future of our Township and protect it from both unnecessary litigation and undesireable development.

The Master Plan for a community is a cornerstone policy document that articulates the vision of the people who live there.

  • Historic Town House Project

    Historic Town House Project

Take a moment and ask yourself, what is the value of our community’s history; the stories of the families who have lived here for generations, who built and served this town; the moments and memories they shared and the buildings they shared them in. What are they worth to you?

Our Historic Town House is one of Tyrone Township’s few historic buildings. It was designated as a historic site by the State of Michigan, and was a place built to bring a community of people together. The Town House provided a space where gatherings of all sorts, meetings, and elections were held. It was THE common thread that brought this small community together. There are residents living here today whose lives have been committed to caring for this building, but more importantly the stories & moments that come with it. These are the same people who have archived and protected our legacies, both written and verbal. Isn’t this the fabric of who we are as a community? Isn’t it the lives we’ve lived and the moments we share together that weave the unique tapestry of who we are as collective residents of Tyrone Township?

Our Township leaders have moved to a new building around the corner from the old. RCP is determined to help the Historical Society preserve the Historic 1887 Town Hall Building. The property has been sold, and the window of opportunity to preserve our little bit of Tyrone Township history will be extended so that the Historical Society can seek funds for this project.

To many, the Town House is a foundational piece that represents the very core of who we are together. It’s a treasure not to be lost or forgotten, but to be cherished & protected. The voices of the people that built and served this community for decades deserve to be heard, to know their work and their stories have value. The thing we must all understand is that once lost, this is something that cannot be replaced. Once again, I ask you to come together and help us preserve this important legacy.

Help us support the Tyrone Township Historical Society and their efforts to preserve the Historic Town House!

    Tyrone Revisited Book!

Tyrone Revisited hosts a collection of family stories at the very heart of our community. These families have lived, served, and made Tyrone Township what it is over many decades. From working to build the first Town House as a community center point in 1887, to moving it to preserve it in 1975, these are the families with the longest standing legacies in our community. The building was also re-dedicated as a Michigan Historic Site in 1975. Learn more about our community roots.

  • Roadside Clean Up

    Roadside Clean Up

RCP hosted its first roadside clean up in August 2021.

On short notice, 3 volunteers and 1 praying mantis managed to collect 7 large bags of refuse near Old 23 and Center Road.

We hope to grow our impact next summer. Imagine what we could do with 15 volunteers…or 30? Follow us on FB or subscribe to our email list for events and announcements!

Help us keep our community pristine.

  • No Rezone! #Resist the Plant

    Resist the Plant Project Mission:

Through community AWARENESS, community ACTION, and community FUNDRAISING, we seek to stop the rezoning of 124 acres of residential farmland to heavy industrial space, and the subsequent building of an asphalt plant in Tyrone Township, Michigan.

    Summary

In February 2021, an application was submitted to Tyrone Township requesting rezoning of 124 acres of residential farmland to M2 heavy industrial space. In addition a special land use request was made by Capital Asphalt to build a new asphalt plant, contingent upon approval of this rezone request.

Our team immediately took action raising awareness in the community, consulting with experts, compiling research, hiring an attorney, and establishing a collegial relationship with Township officials. Our work was to communicate with residents and with the Township about the devastating, long-lasting impact this decision could potentially have on our community. Our research included considerations for environmental impacts on air and water, ecosystems, traffic, home values, and human health.

In April, 2021, the applicant for the rezone request asked the Township to put his application “on hold” after the accompanying special land use permit fell through. This means that while the asphalt plant land use proposal was withdrawn, the application for rezoning is still pending. At this juncture, the application for rezone can go forward to a public hearing and board vote, it can be amended, or it could be withdrawn.

Please note that the “No Rezone” project, and the “Action to Resist the Plant” project are intricately linked. They are separate proposals that were submitted together, with different outcomes.

While the Asphalt Plant proposal was withdrawn, the proposals for rezoning are still pending. If you’d like to know more about steps we have taken to defeat the rezone, please click on the “Action to Resist the Plant” button above.
